BestPrepSchools.co.uk - helping parents choose the best private preparatory or pre-preparatory school for their child

Just wanted to say many thanks for all your help with my son. The school did accept him and he is very happy and settled. It would not have been possible without your help for which I am truly grateful. I will definitely recommend my friends and family to you.

Boarding Prep Schools

Ideal Preparation for Senior Boarding School

There are a reasonable number of UK boarding prep schools, which offer accommodation for pupils at ages 7 or 8 onwards. Please note there are hardly any pre-prep boarding schools for children under the age of 7. Additionally, a number of so called prep boarding schools actually only offer weekly boarding from Monday to Friday or close the school for weekend exeats every 3 weeks, which means they are only suitable for parents who live nearby to those schools and can take their children home at weekends. There are hardly any prep boarding schools in London itself – so most boarding preps are in the countryside.

For us to recommend a school as a true full boarding prep school, a minimum of 25% of pupils should be full boarders, and there should be at least 40 boarders at the school at weekends. Full boarding preps should have a busy weekend programme to keep children occupied. If there are no programmed sports and activities on Saturdays for all pupils, then the school is really a day school.

Parents may choose a prep boarding school for a number of reasons. Some consider the experience to be an ideal preparation for a heritage public boarding school, such as Eton, Harrow, Wycombe Abbey or Cheltenham Ladies College. They will generally be targeting highly academic prep schools where over 50% children are full boarders. Other parents may be looking for an opportunity for their children to be kept busy with a range of extra-curricular activities and supervised homework sessions during the week when they are busy, and then have the children home with them at the weekend. This is an increasingly popular choice for London parents who will be interested in prep schools offering weekly boarding in the Home Counties.

International parents often send their children to UK boarding schools to improve their English, in which case one needs to be sure that the school has a strong English learning support department.

There is a huge difference in ethos and culture between one prep boarding school and another. So, tell us your aspirations and requirements and our bespoke placement service will guide you to the best fit of school for your child.
